About Kano
CLIMATE

Kano experiences three different climates from March to late May, a hot and dry season from beginning of June to the end of September and from October to February is the cold harmattan season.  Ranifall can be heavy especially during the months of July and August.

POPULATION

Kano State is one of the most densely populated state in Nigeria.  Kano City has approximately 2.3 million inhabitants.  The total population of Kano State is over 12 million people (2006 Census) mostly Fulani and Hausa.  Other important tribes are the Kanuri, Yoruba, Ibo, Nupe and Tiv.

LANGUAGE

English is the official language in Nigeria, while Hausa is the Lingua Franca in the state and other northern states.  Hausa is also spoken in many West African countries like Niger, Chad, Ghana, senegal and Cameroon.

RELIGION

Islam is the main religion in the state.  Muslims pray five times a day.  On friday afternoons, several thousands of Muslims offer the Juma'at Prayer at 2:00pm, at the designated mosques.  There are over 100, 000 Mosques in Kano (including the road side praying enclosures) and, a minimum of 2000 Juma'at Mosques located in various parts of the city.  Many people understand Arabic and it is taught in most schools.

ECONOMY

The backbone of the Kano State Economy is Agriculture (75%).  There are over 24 Dams in the State, the primary ones being the Challawa and Tiga Dams, which provide water for irrigation activities.  Main agricultural products include groundnut, maize, wheat, millet, rice, sorghum, beans and vegetables.  Other economic activities in the State include livestock rearing, textiles, wood and calabash carvings, poultry, dyeing, fishing, weaving, tanning and traditional architecture
GEOGRAPHY

Kano State comprises an area of 20,760 square kilometers.  The state borders Jigawa State to the East, Katsina State to the North West, Kaduna and Bauchi States to the South respectively.  The capital of Kano State is Kano and presently has a total of 44 Local Government Councils.
