This gate was initially named after the third son of Kano called Makeri (who was also known as Dan Kwai). The name Dawanau came about in the year 1470 AD. He was one of the richest farmers who possessed a very big land covering an area of about 20 square miles with over 1000 servants working under him and a large extended family. Due to his popularity, the gate was re-named after him by the then Sarki Mohammadu Kisa Kewa Dan Abdullahi, who built a farm house very close to the gate in 1567 AD. The original name of DAWANAU is 'DANNAU DANGUDA'.
