In the year 1691 during the reign of Sarkin Kano Mohammed Zaki na Zaki, he directed his son Wambai Abubakar to continue with the expansion work of the old city gates and wall. At the end of the work Wambai Abubakar invited his father to come and commission the gate. The King honoured the invitation and named the gate as 'kofar Gadon Kaya'. Gadon Kaya is a nickname given Mallam Ismala who happened to be a well known gardener around the gate.
